For many years, Sunroad Enterprises has been a champion of the Burn Institute’s burn support services, including Camp Beyond the Scars, fire prevention education programs and the fire service. They have sponsored several fundraisers as well. For these reasons, Sunroad Enterprises was named The Burn Institute’s Health Hero for 2010.

2010
San Diego Fire Fighters Local 145 was awarded the 2010 Health Hero title for their countless volunteer hours and for donating more than $400,000 to the Burn Institute to provide vital funding for programs & services.

2009
For nearly a decade, Charlie Brown, Director of Viejas Community Relations and Tribal Member of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, has been a supporter of the Burn Institute. Hundreds of tribal members have volunteered at various BI events and Viejas has sponsored and participated in nearly every program offered by the institute. Congratulations to Charlie Brown and the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians for being our 2009 Health Heroes.

2008
Our 2008 Health Hero was Dr. Bruce Potenza and the UCSD Regional Burn Center Staff. The Staff provides the community with an extraordinary medical need under extraordinary circumstances. During the recent wildfires, the staff cared for more than 30 burn survivors, with some patients under intense medical supervision for more than two months.

2007
The Burn Institute congratulates Captain Linda D’Orsi for being our 2007 Health Hero. For nearly a decade Linda has been volunteering her time at the Burn Institute. She has assisted with the annual “Give Burns the Boot” Firefighter Boot Drive, the annual Burn Run/FIRE EXPO and Camp Beyond the Scars.
2006
In 2006 Chief Erwin Willis from the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District was the Burn Institute’s Health Hero for his role as a member of the BI’s Board of Directors and for his volunteer work with the S.D. County Fire Chiefs’ Association Annual Golf Tournament. He was also instrumental in helping to create the best Wildfire Prevention Guide in the country as well as maintaining a well-functioning computer network at no cost to the Institute.
2005
The San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association was awarded a Health Hero Award. For its ongoing support of the BI including helping to create the 12-page Living with Wildfire Guide and for hosting the annual San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association Golf Tournament for over 15 years to benefit the Burn Institute.
Burn Institute Auxiliary President Denise Burk was honored with the 2005 Combined Health Agencies (CHAD) Volunteer of The Year Award. This CHAD award program emphasizes the value of nonprofit volunteers from throughout the community and recognizes their outstanding contributions. Over the past decade Denise’s contributions to the Burn Institute have been nothing less than exemplary. She has donated countless volunteer hours at various Burn Institute events. As a member of the Burn Institute auxiliary, she has been instrumental in organizing the Auxiliary’s largest annual fundraising event – The Share Your Heart, Auction, Wine Tasting & Casino Night. Denise also volunteers at Camp Beyond the Scars twice a year, where her area of expertise is crafts. Subsequently, she is known as the camp “Craft Lady.” From purchasing supplies to setting up the craft room, Denise creates exciting and memorable craft projects for young burn survivors.
2004
Miramar Fire Engineer Mark Weimann was awarded the 2004 CHAD Volunteer of the Year Award. Mark has volunteered as a Burn Institute volunteer for more than four year. His efforts include helping with special events. In 2004, Mark served as the chair of the Firefighters’ Destruction Derby. His efforts, with the Firefighters’ Destruction Derby helped raise tens of thousands of dollars to support the Burn Institute. Mark also assists with the annual “Give Burns The Boot” Countywide Firefighter Boot Drive.
