It only takes a second... In January 2009, four-year-old Gideon was visiting his father, watching TV in a make-shift bedroom in the garage. Even though his father was checking in on him from time to time, Gideon found a lighter. That’s when Gideon’s life changed forever…
The fire quickly spread and Gideon was surrounded by smoke and flames. His father found him hiding behind the door on the floor trying to cover his face from the flames.
Gideon suffered severe burns to his hands and face. He was treated at the UCSD Regional Burn Center and during his three month stay Gideon endured many surgical procedures including skin grafts.
Burn survivors like Gideon have a long road to recovery. And that road is traveled not just by them, but family members as well. To help with the stress, the strain, and the struggles throughout the physical and psychological recovery, the Burn Institute works to provide whatever the family needs to get them through this terrifying ordeal.
The Burn Institute covered the $1,600 cost of a total contact mask (pressure mask for the face that treats facial burns to reduce scar tissue, keeping it from becoming red, raised, and rigid). The Burn Institute also covered the $750 cost to send Gideon to summer Camp Beyond The Scars – a fun and encouraging environment for young burn survivors ~ a big step forward in the transformation from burn victim to burn survivor. But this is only the beginning of the support we will provide Gideon in his lifetime.
We simply cannot continue to provide this kind of support to Gideon and children like him without your help. By making a tax deductible gift of $25, $50 or $100 or whatever you can for young burn survivors, you, become part of their transformation.
