Fire & Burn Prevention : Fire, Burns & You Curriculum Guide

Residential fires claim the lives of more than 3,000 people each year, and more than one million people living in the United States are treated for severe burn injuries annually – nearly 5,000 die as the result of those injuries. This is astonishing when you stop t consider that an estimated 80-percent of all burn injuries are preventable.

The Burn Institute knows that education is the key to eradicating fires and burns, and while National Fire Prevention Week occurs each October, fire and burn safety should always be a year-round concern.

In a state as populated as California, and in a county like San Diego with such a devastating fire history, you can never be too fire safe, and no one knows fire and burn prevention better than the Burn Institute. Through quality educational programs, such as the Fire & Burn Prevention: Fire Burns & You Curriculum Guide, the Burn Institute hopes to put an end to preventable burn injuries, fires and deaths. The lessons in this guide are designed in accordance with the State of California’s English-Language Art, Social Studies, Health and Science content standards and integrate the newspaper as a living textbook. We hope teachers across the county and across the nation will enjoy using this fire and burn prevention curriculum guide in their classrooms.
