This annual firefighter boot drive is sponsored by the San Diego-Imperial County Firefighters Advisory Council to the Burn Institute. Firefighters collect money in their boots during the morning and evening commutes. This is the Burn Institute’s largest one-day fundraiser of the year. The Padres pay tribute to the fire service with pre-game ceremonies that include hundreds of firefighters lining the first and third base paths while a firefighter sings the National Anthem. A special fire service tribute video is shown on the stadium’s big screen, and a young burn survivor throws out the first pitch. Each year the Burn Institute honors those who have risked their lives to save another from severe burn injury or death by fire. In May 2010, this tremendous honor will once again be bestowed to several brave and fearless individuals who have exhibited exceptional courage to save the life of a fellow human being. The life-saving act for which they are nominated must involve a high degree of personal risk and exposure to themselves. The Burn Institute's annual FIRE EXPO/FIREFIGHTER DEMO DERBY takes place in June as part of the San Diego County Fair. FIRE EXPO/FIREFIGHTER DEMO DERBY heightens awareness of modern emergency services and includes "live" firefighting demonstrations, a fire and burn prevention pavilion, a firefighter obstacle course for the kids, live music, food and more more. The FIREFIGHTER DEMO DERBY leaves spectators with standing room only as they cheer the drivers on with deafening energy! The Fire Ball is held in the Imperial Valley each year and has become one of the most popular events in the area, bringing more than 400 guests, dozens of sponsors and support from local businesses. The festivities include dinner, dancing, silent auction, and casino fun. The event also includes a “Tribute to the Fire Service.” The funds raised at this exciting event directly benefit the Burn Institute’s important work in the Imperial Valley. The Burn Institute's annual Chief's Tournament has been upgraded to a fantastic two-day event with its kick-off Gala on a Sunday, (the 2011 gala will be a special day of significance being held on September 11 which will be the 10th anniversary of 9/11). The golf classic takes place the next day, Monday at Maderas Golf Club in Poway, hosted by Sunroad Enterprises.
