Cindy Rutter
When Cindy Rutter was only 6-years-old, the water heater located in her bedroom exploded. Spewing hot scalding water and igniting the house on fire, Cindy sustained third degree burns to more than 85-percent of her body. Cindy’s strength and perseverance enabled her to overcome her physical and emotional challenges. Aside from a busy career and family, Cindy, a former burn unit nurse, serves as a facilitator for burn support sessions at the Burn Institute’s Retreat for Adult Burn Survivors and Camp Beyond the Scars. Having served as a Burn Institute volunteer for more than a decade, her participation has made her a role model for burn survivors young and old alike. Cindy also serves as a member of the Burn Institute Advisory Board and the Burn Institute Auxiliary. In 2002, Cindy was awarded the Newsweek California Nurse of the Year Award and was a finalist for the Chargers’ Community Quarterback Award for her philanthropic dedication to the Burn Institute.
